Air purifier listings love big numbers like “covers 1,000 square feet”. Health Canada gives a much more useful rule for sizing one, and applying it changes which models make sense for which rooms. This guide walks through the rule, then looks at four purifiers that are top sellers on Amazon.

Health Canada’s sizing rule
Health Canada’s guidance on choosing a portable air purifier says to look for a unit certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), to avoid devices that produce ozone, and to match the unit to the room using its CADR (clean air delivery rate). CADR ratings assume an 8-foot ceiling. Health Canada suggests a tobacco smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet, so a 120 sq ft room needs a smoke CADR of at least 80. To reduce fine particles such as wildfire smoke, it advises picking the highest smoke CADR your budget allows. (Source: Health Canada, Choosing a portable air purifier.)
Turned around, that rule means the largest room a purifier suits is its smoke CADR multiplied by 1.5. A unit with a smoke CADR of 143, for example, suits a room of about 214 sq ft by that rule, which is a bedroom or small office, not the whole-floor figure that appears in some marketing copy. Marketing coverage figures can use a longer time frame. The Winix listing below, for example, quotes 1,881 sq ft in one hour next to an AHAM-verified 392 sq ft, so compare the CADR instead.
Four top-selling purifiers
These appear on Amazon’s own Best Sellers list for Air Purifiers (checked October 14, 2026). Rankings change daily. Figures below come from the product listings, so confirm them on the product page and check the AHAM directory for the certified CADR numbers.
Levoit Core 300-P
- Listing states AHAM Verifide, with CADR of 143 CFM for smoke and 153 CFM for dust.
- By the two-thirds rule that is a room of up to about 214 sq ft.
- Best for: a bedroom or home office. The listing offers a pet allergy filter and a toxin absorber filter as options, and a display you can turn off for sleep.
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH
- Listing states coverage of spaces up to 361 sq ft in 12.5 minutes, True HEPA, and an air-quality sensor with an auto mode and an eco mode that turns the fan off when air stays clean.
- Best for: a medium room where you want it to adjust itself.
Winix 5510
- Listing states AHAM Verifide at 392 sq ft, True HEPA, a washable pre-filter, a carbon filter and Wi-Fi control.
- Best for: a larger living space where you want an AHAM-verified rating at a bigger room size.
Levoit Vital 200S-P
- Listing markets coverage up to 1,875 sq ft and describes allergy-focused filtration with smart controls.
- That is a marketing coverage number. Look up the AHAM-verified smoke CADR before deciding which room it suits.
Watch: independent air purifier videos
These two videos are from HouseFresh, an independent air-quality site. The first explains how to choose a purifier. The second reviews the Levoit Core 300, which is related to, but not the same as, the Core 300-P listed above, so compare specifications before buying.
Buying checklist
- Check the smoke CADR, then apply the two-thirds rule to your room.
- Look for AHAM verification and avoid any unit that makes ozone.
- Add up the yearly filter cost, not just the purchase price. Health Canada says to clean or replace filters as the manufacturer recommends.
- Pick a lower noise rating if it will run in a bedroom.
- Run it with doors and windows closed, at the highest fan speed you can tolerate when outdoor air is smoky.
