Canadian winters dry out indoor air, and a humidifier is the usual fix. But a humidifier that is too strong or poorly cleaned causes its own problems. This guide covers the humidity target, the water question that Alberta researchers studied, and three humidifiers that are top sellers on Amazon.

What humidity should you aim for in winter?
Health Canada’s page on cool-mist humidifiers says to keep indoor humidity at about 30% in winter and about 50% in summer, to measure it with a hygrometer, and to use a dehumidifier if levels run high. ATCO Energy’s guidance for Alberta homes is 30% to 50% overall, with about 30% to 35% in winter to help prevent condensation on windows. Both point the same way: in cold weather, lower is safer, because moisture condenses on cold windows and walls. (Sources: Health Canada, Cool-mist humidifiers; ATCO Energy.)
Tap water or distilled water?
Health Canada says tap water is fine in most cases as long as you change the water and clean the unit regularly, and that distilled water releases far fewer particles. A University of Alberta study found that tap water in an ultrasonic humidifier released a large amount of particulate matter, which the researchers described as equivalent to a polluted city, while distilled water bought at local grocery stores released none. The minerals and salts in tap water stay in the air as fine particles after the water evaporates, and particles from a humidifier in an upstairs bedroom spread through the whole house. (Source: University of Alberta.) If you choose an ultrasonic model, that is a reason to budget for distilled water.
Health Canada also says to empty the reservoir every time you turn the unit off, refill it only when you are about to use it again, and clean and disinfect the reservoir regularly following the manufacturer’s directions.
Three top-selling humidifiers
These appear on Amazon’s own Best Sellers list for Humidifiers (checked October 14, 2026). Rankings change daily. Details come from the product listings, so confirm them on the product page.
DREO 4 L top-fill cool-mist humidifier
- Listing describes an ultrasonic design with a 4 L tank, top fill and a wide mist outlet, and mentions filtered water to reduce limescale and white dust.
- Because it is ultrasonic, the water advice above applies.
Levoit Classic 160 cool-mist humidifier
- Listing states a 2.5 L tank, up to 25 hours on low, noise as low as 26 dB, top fill and knob control.
- Best for: a bedroom or small room where simple controls matter.
Levoit LV600S warm and cool mist humidifier
- Listing states a 6 L tank, coverage of 753 sq ft, 550 ml/h output, app control and a sleep mode under 28 dB.
- Best for: a larger room or open area. Warm mist units run hotter, so keep them out of reach of children and pets.

Buying checklist
- Buy a hygrometer first and aim for roughly 30% to 35% in the coldest weather.
- Choose top-fill models with wide openings, which are easier to clean.
- Plan for cleaning and for distilled water if you buy an ultrasonic model.
- Watch your windows. If condensation forms, lower the setting.
- Size the tank and output to the room, not the whole house.
